Matthew 20 - Don’t Be First, Be a Servant
In this episode, we discuss Matthew 20, a chapter filled with parables and lessons from Jesus. Let’s begin by discussing the parable of the vineyard workers, each being paid a denarius regardless of how long they worked. To us, it may seem unfair, but Jesus is teaching us about the Kingdom of Heaven and God’s generosity, and how not to be envious.
Jesus is on his journey to Jerusalem and predicts his own death. He warns his disciples that he will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, condemned to death, and then raised on the third day. We also touch on the story of Salome, the mother of Zebedee, and her request for her sons to sit at Jesus’ left and right hand in the Kingdom. Jesus uses this as a lesson in humility, teaching that greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven is not about earthly ranking or authority, but about service to others.
The story of the blind men in Jericho is also discussed, who call out to Jesus as the “Son of David” for mercy. Jesus, moved by compassion, heals their blindness. We reflect on the different accounts of this miracle and how discrepancies in the number of blind men healed shouldn’t be a cause for concern or doubt in the reliability of the scriptures.
